Don Charles, PE
UC Berkeley
Mr. Charles was born and raised in California’s wine country in Santa Rosa, CA, where his family settled in the late 1800s. He received a Master of Science degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, in 1977. Over the ensuing 20 years, he performed design, construction and project management duties for Bechtel Corp. on assignments throughout the world, including Saudi Arabia, Brunei & Papua New Guinea. After he completed his senior PM responsibilities for the EuroDisney development in France, he returned home in the early 1990’s to start a family, and founded D.H. Charles Engineering.

Current Owner and President Jasper Calcara joined Don in 1998, where the pair of them worked out of a small office behind Don’s house in rural Santa Rosa. The business began to expand rapidly over the following years with the addition of senior engineers Robin Ko and Luke Griffis. In 2002 Jasper opened their Southern California office, and focused on expansion of their services nationally. Don’s passion and knowledge of the construction industry helped DHC become one of the largest and most highly respected temporary works design firms in the country.

As Don was leaning towards a partial retirement to enjoy the success of his hard work, he was tragically killed in a vehicle accident in 2006. It was a devastating loss to his family, friends and many colleagues throughout the industry. Although he is greatly missed, the employees at D.H. Charles Engineering, Inc. are proud to honor the tradition and philosophy Don established in the companies earliest years, of providing immediate response, inventive design, and quality work.
